examples of my work include
Glasgow Kiss which depicts a Rangers fan and a Celtic supporter kissing
under a dove. The boy has a tattoo that reads 'no surrender' etched on his
hand. In spite of this both the boy and girl have surrendered their
sectarian views and replaced them with love. This painting was my own way
of challenging sectarianism.
'Glasgow Kiss' is one of twelve paintings that I produced relating to
'Ned' (Non Educated Delinquent) or 'Chav' culture. Each painting carries a
signature in the form of a Buckfast bottle (widely known as a Neds
favourite tipple). These paintings are a mixture of things I have actually
witnessed and situations I have made up. 'Too Wide' for example was
inspired by the fact that I actually saw a Ned trying to take on a bus! In
many of the paintings I have aimed to make the Ned Culture pictured clash
with other more accepted forms of Glasgow culture such as traditional
architecture and art.
'Window in the East' is my latest painting. It is a comment on declining
communities in urbanised areas. The painting illustrates the flip side of
Avril Patons 'Windows in the West'. In it I have depicted a largely steel
shuttered tenement with one remaining resident who is battling on
regardless of her surroundings. I had the idea for this painting when I
saw entire steel shuttered terraced streets during a trip to Newcastle as
well as near Toryglen, Glasgow.
